The Alter Real, the royal and graceful baroque crossbreed
The Alter Real is a horse breed that is originally from Portugal. It’s a branch of the Lusitano. Originally this horse was bred for the stables of the Portuguese court. The meaning of the word “real” in Portuguese is “royal”.
The Alter Real has a compact build with a short, wide, muscular wide back, strong hocks, and sloping shoulders. They are used as saddle horse and carriage horse.
Due to their sloping shoulders it’s quite difficult to find a perfect fitting horse blanket for the Alter Real.
